Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue perpendicular surveyor's plumb bob within the open end of a white spade iron in front of a red saltire all within a continuous gold scroll, the area at top surmounted by the upper ends of the saltire. Inscribed within the gold scroll are the words "WE CAN ADAPT" in red.

Symbolism

Scarlet and white are the colors used for Engineer organizations, the unit’s original designation.  The surveyor’s plumb bob, spade iron and saltire (symbolic of the crossbeams used in construction) allude to the former basic mission of the battalion.  The red saltire drawn from the cross of St Andrew, represents sacrifice

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 145th Engineer Battalion on 2 October 1970.  It was redesignated for the 440th Ordnance Battalion with the symbolism amended to reflect the mission of the battalion on 26 October 1984.  It was redesignated for the 145th Engineer Battalion on 24 December 1997.  The insignia was redesignated effective 20 September 2002, for the 145th Chemical Battalion, Alabama Army National Guard.  The symbolism was amended 27 July 2023.

Or, a saltire Gules (Scarlet), an escutcheon per pale Argent and Gules, a surveyor's plumb bob Azure detailed of the third within the open end of a spade iron counterchanged.

Crest

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Alabama Army National Guard: From a wreath Or and Gules, a slip of cotton plant with full bursting boll, Proper.

The coat of arms was originally approved for the 145th Engineer Battalion on 24 December 1997.  It was redesignated effective 30 September 2002, for the 145th Chemical Battalion, Alabama Army National Guard.  The symbolism was amended 27 July 2023.
